1st Striped Marlin Released for the 2011 Season

Justin Poe from Shimano fishing on the the Trinidad released the first Striped Marlin for the Southern California season earlier today.  Justin was fishing just a little west of the 267 bank off Dana Point when they spotted a "sleeper".  They casts a bait to the fish and it ate.  The fish was released in good shape about 45 minutes later.  This is the first confirmed release for the local season, several fish have been hooked and lost. BAC Masters Tournament Day 1

The Balboa Angling Clubs Master Angler Billfish Tournament kicked off this morning.  The boats are fishing off Southern California in a light tackle striped marlin tournament.  The first hookup was reported at about 7:15 from the boat Ospery.  The fish was released at 8:21 and was caught on 20# line.  They are fishing in grid 46 off the front side of San Clemente Island. Humbolt Squid Make an appearance off Newport

The Giant Humbolt Squid have returned to the waters off Southern California.  Monday some of the offshore banks were covered with these creatures.  Last night and during the day today they moved into the coastal areas.  Spots of daylight squid were up feeding on just about anything that hit the water.  As close as 2 miles from the harbor entrance to Newport Bay.  Sport boats are reporting them to be in the 5-20 pound range. Red Rooster 7 Day headed home

Cow Yellowfin appear on lower banks

Several long range boats fished the lower banks off the Baja coast and scored on the cow size Yellowfin.  This Fall fishery is just getting started with these trips targeting the Yellowfin Tuna.  The majority of these fish came on sardines fished with an Owner Ringed Super Mutu circle hook 100-130# Fluorocarbon leader, 130# Spectra on a 50 size reel.  Time to call the landings and jump on if you have been waiting for the bite to turn on. SHOGUN & American Angler on the cows

It started last week when a couple of the long range boats from San Diego found the larger Yellowfin Tuna on the lower banks off Baja.  Started off as scratch fishing and has developed into more consistant action.  The Shogun got into the area yesterday and went 10 boated for 20 hookups on fish over the 100# mark.  The American Angler is in the zone and the Excel is steaming her way down the coast.  If you have been waiting to get on a 10-12 trip, call the landings now and go, IT'S ON! Marlin Casting- Pitch Bait Rods
