FIN-NOR: THE LEGACY YEARS by Bruce Matthews & Ed Pritchard
THE FIN-NOR STORY IS ONE OF ENORMOUS FISHES, EXOTIC PLACES, LEGENDARY CHARACTERS AND MECHANICAL WIZARDRY. CELEBRATED AS THE "ROLLS ROYCE OF BIG GAME FISHING REELS," FIN-NOR EMERGED IN THE 1930'S OUT OF THE HOTBED OF MIAMI'S EMERGING FISHING SCENE, SETTING AN AMAZING 381 WORLD BIG GAME FISHING RECORDS, INCLUDING THE LARGEST BLACK MARLIN AND SWORDFISH EVER CAUGHT ON ROD AND REEL.

BUT FIN-NOR: THE LEGACY YEARS IS MORE THAN THE HISTORY OF THE REEL THAT BECAME KNOWN AS THE "GOLD STANDARD" OF SALTWATER REELS. IT'S THE TALE OF A "PERFECT STORM" OF CIRCUMSTANCES THAT LEADS TO FIN-NOR'S DEVELOPMENT OUT OF AN OBSCURE MIAMI BOAT ENGINE REPAIR SHOP. MIAMI IN THE '30'S WAS A CRUCIBLE FOR NEW IDEAS IN FISHING, DRIVEN BY THE DISCOVERY OF GIGANTIC AND HERTOFORE UN-CATCHABLE TUNA AND MARLIN JUST ACROSS THE FLORIDA STRAIGHTS AT BIMINI. SPORTSMAN-CONSERVATIONISTS FUELED THE PURSUIT, AND LITERARY LEGENDS LIKE ERNEST HEMINGWAY AND ZANE GREY PUBLICIZED IT.

FIN-NOR'S STORY IS A FASCINATING SLICE OF TIME FROM A BYGONE ERA WITH APPEAL FOR ANGLERS AND NON-ANGLERS ALIKE. METICULOUSLY RESEARCHED AND COMPELLINGLY SHARED, OUTDOOR JOURNALIST BRUCE MATTHEWS AND ANTIQUE TACKLE COLLECTOR ED PRITCHARD TAKE US ON A JOURNEY ALONGSIDE LEGENDARY ANGLERS IN THEIR QUEST FOR A REEL THAT WOULD HELP THEM CAPTURE THE LARGEST FISHES THE WORLD HAS EVER SEEN.

AS YOU WILL READ, HOLDING A FIN-NOR REEL IN THEIR HANDS TODAY, AN ANGLER OR COLLECTOR IS CONNECTED TO A VIBRANT LEGACY EVOLVED THROUGH THE VISION AND DETERMINATION OF MANY OF THE GREATEST BIG GAME ANGLERS AND CONSERVATIONISTS — WOMEN AND MEN — THE WORLD HAS EVER KNOWN

The Encyclopedia of the Sea- Richard Ellis
From one of the world's leading experts on the sea comes this ocean-sized compendium of aquatic life and lore. Richard Ellis--who is also recognized as America's foremost painter of marine subjects--gives us a masterful synthesis of years of investigation and tens of thousands of disparate sources. The result is the first comprehensive, fully illustrated, and highly readable reference on almost everything that is known about the sea.

Ellis's research has taken him all over the world--from Nantucket to Patagonia, from Newfoundland to New Zealand. Now he leads us on a great journey: from the amazing diversity of the creatures of the oceans to the birds who inhabit the skies above them; from the little-known realms of marine geography to the men and women who have bravely explored them; from the fabulous legends the sea has inspired through the ages to the intriguing evolution of the tools of nautical navigation.

With more than 450 of the author's own drawings and paintings accompanying the text, Ellis reveals the many wonders of the oceans--abalone, zooxanthellae, and everything in between. We learn about the peculiar behavior of Vampyroteuthis infernalis (the "vampire squid from hell") and about Mocha Dick, the real sperm whale that may have inspired Melville's Moby-Dick; where the crown-of-thorns starfish gets its name and how the rare coelacanth, cousin to a species extinct for 70 million years--and one of the most mispronounced fish in the sea--was rediscovered. We visit lovely and exotic locations from Venice to Ni'ihau (Hawaii's "forbidden isle"), and consider both the fearsome kraken (a mythical sea monster often seen by Scandinavian clergymen) and the notorious real-life pirate Captain Kidd (whose hidden treasure was never found).

Exhaustive, concise, and entertaining, the Encyclopedia of the Sea is invaluable as an all-inclusive, one-volume source for anyone interested in the sea, its inhabitants, and man's exploration of its mysteries.

Marlin Fishing- Bill Hall
Bill Hall is one of the few people who is truly a legend in his own lifetime. As owner and skipper of the boat Te Ariki Nui he has rewritten the New Zealand and IGFA (International Game Fish Association) record books for marlin.  He has skippered or caught 19 world records. He was the first in New a and probably the world to land 10 marlin in one day, all 100kg plus. In 1996 he won the Champion Game Boat for the season with 75 marlin, breaking the record that had stood since 1946. In 1997 to prove it was not a fluke he caught 85, with 80 tagged and released all on lures.  For most of the last forty years he has fished as an amateur, only making Te Ariki Nui available for charter since 1995.  His was the first New Zealand game boat to discard skip baits and to pull lures full time. The first to target the Three King’s and Middlesex Bank and discover the extraordinary fishing there, that has changed the face of gamefishing in New Zealand. He was one of the first to night fish for broadbill. The first to sail non-stop to Australia and catch marlin all the way there and back. The first game boat to visit Tonga and as a result start the gamefishing industry there.  A regular contributor to New Zealand Fishing News, he has featured in and written for Marlin Magazine in the USA. His exploits have been the subject of numerous articles and have featured on TV in the USA, Europe and New Zealand.

Megalops: An Affair with Tarpon- Tosh Brown

From Key West to Belize to Venezuela, the author has passionately and unceasingly pursued this big-eyed behemoth of the Atlantic. As the young owner of a fledgling sporting travel business, Tosh had the good fortune of visiting some of the most productive tarpon waters of the world and fishing with some of the best guides in the business. This is his insightful and often humorous account of chasing the Silver King with a fly rod, along with some discussion of the storied history of the tarpon fishery along his native Texas coast, particularly the legendary tarpon destination, Port Aransas.

This new Meadow Run Press book is illustrated with a full-color section of the author's stunning photographs along with some never before seen photographs of some spectacular early tarpon fishing. Mixed throughout are some interesting observations on the difficulty in casting to and hooking and releasing tarpon - often as large as the angler - from a small outboard skiff. This book is a pure delight and a jewel in any saltwater fisherman's library.
