Red Rooster 7 Day headed home

The 2011 7 day Long Range trip on the Red Rooster III left Alijos Rocks today to head back to San Diego.  A mixed bag of Yellowfin Tuna to 100lbs, Wahoo, Dorado and Yellowtail finished up the trip for the happy anglers.  The early days were spent on the "Ridge" for Yellowtail, Dorado, School Tuna, Pargo and some Grouper.  The boat will be into San Diego on Friday Oct. 7., will update this with a final wrap up.  Thank you for our charter master Sonny Jones, and our sponsors for their plethera of [Read more]

Humbolt Squid Make an appearance off Newport

The Giant Humbolt Squid have returned to the waters off Southern California.  Monday some of the offshore banks were covered with these creatures.  Last night and during the day today they moved into the coastal areas.  Spots of daylight squid were up feeding on just about anything that hit the water.  As close as 2 miles from the harbor entrance to Newport Bay.  Sport boats are reporting them to be in the 5-20 pound range. BAC Masters Tournament Day 1

The Balboa Angling Clubs Master Angler Billfish Tournament kicked off this morning.  The boats are fishing off Southern California in a light tackle striped marlin tournament.  The first hookup was reported at about 7:15 from the boat Ospery.  The fish was released at 8:21 and was caught on 20# line.  They are fishing in grid 46 off the front side of San Clemente Island. 1st Striped Marlin Released for the 2011 Season

Justin Poe from Shimano fishing on the the Trinidad released the first Striped Marlin for the Southern California season earlier today.  Justin was fishing just a little west of the 267 bank off Dana Point when they spotted a "sleeper".  They casts a bait to the fish and it ate.  The fish was released in good shape about 45 minutes later.  This is the first confirmed release for the local season, several fish have been hooked and lost. Bluefin, Etc.

Bluefin tuna are scattered over a large area from below the border to the outside edge of the 9 mile bank, out to the 43 fathom bank, Butterfly Bank, Mushroom, the 60 mile bank and off to the South West.  Received a report from the Albacore Jig Boat fleet that they are working an large area of Albacore at about 300 miles below and outside Pt Loma.  Current conditions are prime for these fish to move up into "local" waters.  The forecast this week is for windy conditions on the outside which will make [Read more]

Bluefin Tuna

The American Angler arrived late yesterday into the zone that has been holding the Bluefin south of San Diego.  Excellent conditions and sign of fish, they slid in on a large school and picked off 71 tuna in this first afternoon of fishing. [Read more]

White Sea Bass & Barracuda

Local sportboats continue to be doing well along the coast on the Barracuda, running in about 15 fathoms of water from the Huntington Flats area south to off the Huntington Beach Power Plant.  Occasional Sea Bass is being caught below the Barracuda.  Good to excellent Sea Bass fishing the past couple of days in the Point Fermin and Rocky Point areas of Palos Verdes.  Some speculate these are the same body of fish that were off Huntington Beach late last week. Bait Report 6-3

Just in time for the weekend the Newport and Long Beach bait receivers got a fresh load of live squid.  They both also have Sardines available.  The White Sea Bass bite at Catalina has had some really good action this week.  Buoyweather.com reports some breeze from the West this afternoon and improving conditions over the next 2 days.  Light & Variable.  As always be sure to check conditions before you head offshore. Albacore Update
